Each student’s participation in the Rotary Youth Exchange program is conditional upon successful completion of three outbound student orientation meetings.
Saturday, February 11, 2012
The first orientation session will be held on the second Saturday of February. At this session, the students are provided general information about Rotary and Youth Exchange and Rotary’s expectations of our Youth Exchange students. The students will also be given a general outline of a Rotary Club speech and will be asked to prepare an 8 to 10 minute speech for the second orientation session.
Blog Communications. We are asking each student to setup and use a blog like a diary or journal to document their exchange experience. The blog will also communicate their experience to family, friends, Rotary and the world. We setup a free blog account for each student. We will discuss blog communications – what to blog, what to avoid, and how to write their unique experience. Over the next few months, the students will be asked to blog about getting ready for the exchange. By the time they leave for their exchange, they will have an active blog, customized by them and some blogging experience. We want them comfortable with the blog BEFORE the exchange. Then blogging their actual exchange experiences will be easier, faster, and hopefully more interesting. Their blogs will be share with our other outbound students, sharing their experiences as they happen.
Saturday, March 10, 2012
The second meeting will take place on the second Saturday of March. One, or both, of each student’s parents is asked to attend the morning informational session which concentrates on finances, travel considerations, insurance requirements, passport applications, and other technical matters. The students will then give their speeches, which may be accompanied with audio-visuals, including Powerpoint. We will also review their blogs.
Friday and Saturday, May 18 and 19, 2012
The final outbound student orientation will take place at our annual Rotary District 6060 Conference at the Sheraton Westport Chalet Hotel from Friday evening, May 18th, through Saturday evening, May 19th. Outbound students will have the opportunity to interact with inbound students currently hosted in our Rotary District, as well as District 6060 Rotarians.
